X Men: Dark Phoneix might be last week’s biggest releases; however, expectations are falling short. Disney- Fox’s latest instalment in the X-Men franchise is on tempo for a $34 million opening after collecting just $14 million on Friday. For an X-Men movie, it’s the worst debut ever.
The movie has suffered a catastrophic opening at the box office, grossing just $14 million (£11 million) regardless of yielding an eye-catching $200 million (£157 million) to develop it.
The Simon Kinberg-directed blockbuster stars Sophie Turner in the lead in Jean Grey’s role, along with James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence as Raven aka Mystique. However, it seems that the star-studded cast wasn’t enough to save Dark Phoenix as it has endured the worst opening in the history of X-Men movies.
According to reports, Dark Phoenix grossed a humble $14 million in the US on Friday and is anticipated to take around $34 million across its opening weekend. No doubt, the numbers would be a huge blow to the movie studio, Twentieth Century Fox, who hit a $200 million budget into the film. The latest in the long-running X-Men franchise hasn’t turned out well with critics as it has an immeasurable 20% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s even more of a blow that Dark Phoenix comes behind The Secret Life of Pets 2, which is supposed to close the weekend at number one with a healthy $46.1 million.
