The Goodness of Coffee

A ruling from a judge in Los Angeles decided that companies such as Starbucks should inform the customers about a cancer-causing chemical commonly found in coffee. The Council for Education and Research on Toxics filed lawsuits on 91 companies for they did not inform their customers about the chemical which gets produced when the coffee beans are roasted. The name of the chemical is acrylamide. Acrylamide is also found in cigarette smoke and in some foods.
The American Cancer Society said the chemical acrylamide has shown chances of cancer in rats and mice. But the society did not confirm about the ill effects of acrylamide in humans.
Starbucks and the other companies said that coffee doesn’t have enough acrylamide in coffee that can harm the humans. The case against the coffee companies is not over yet and no one knows how much money these companies will have to pay.
The ruling over the companies is considered by as a pure example of overreaction. The presence of acrylamide in coffee is so low that it can hardly cause any type of cancer. To this Loannidis added, among the various things humans consume every day. Coffee ranks the last in causing any kinds of cancer.
Studies have shown that people who drink coffee prevent themselves from developing melanoma, liver cancer and cancer of the prostate gland. People who have been drinking coffee and had developed colon cancer tend to live longer than patients who do not drink coffee.
Drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases, stroke, and congestive heart failure. A study has shown that coffee consumption can increase your lifespan. Coffee contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.
