On Thursday, Amazon and Blue Origin’s founder, Jeff Bezos, disclosed a new moon lander called Blue Moon, along with a small rover.
At a press event at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, Bezos stated that it’s an unbelievable vehicle that is going to the moon. He gave this statement while standing in front of the lander.
According to Forbes, Bezos, the world’s richest person narrated a grand, multigenerational vision of one day creating vast space colonies in close presence to Earth, as a way of growing humanity to a trillion people. This concept, visualized by physicist Gerard O’Neill in 1975, is something Bezos has discussed in a few interviews over the last year. He’s looking to use Blue Origin, and the new lander, as early steps in this endeavor.
Blue Moon was in development stage for three years and Bezos stated on Thursday that the larger form of the lander would be able to bring Americans back to the moon by 2024. It’ll be able to carry the rover that could do scientific missions and shoot off small satellites.
The year 2024 is also the deadline the Trump administration has placed for NASA to return astronauts to the surface of the moon, something which Bezos referred to. Bezos isn’t the only billionaire who is holding the lofty space dreams. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is also in the line to develop larger rockets for orbital space travel.
However, Bezos stated on Thursday that the early work of Blue Origin should help build an infrastructure for space that would give millions of people access to space travel and unlock the prospective of countless future entrepreneurs and artists. Apart from these huge goals, Blue Origin this year is kicking off space tourism flights, with the hope of increasing its revenue and training itself for compatible flights outside Earth’s orbit.
