Brazil’s defender Thiago Silva thinks Argentina’s Lionel Messi has been saving his best form for Wednesday’s Copa America semi-final.
Hosts Brazil meets Argentina in Belo Horizonte (01:30 BST) for a berth on Sunday’s final. Messi has scored once in the tournament – from the penalty spot – and once he stated that he is not playing at his level best. Thiago Silva, who also plays as a central defender for Paris Saint Germain stated that Messi is the best player in the world and he might become active.
Argentina has reached four of the last five Copa America finals but has not won the tournament since 1993, and has struggled to hit top form in Brazil. They unlocked in Brazil with a 2-0 defeat by Colombia in Salvador before Messi’s penalty earned a 1-1 draw with Paraguay.
Argentina only progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Qatar 2-0 before they send off Venezuela by the same score. During the last-eight win over Venezuela, Messi, had three shots.
The Barcelona forward, who is yet to win a major international title with Argentina stated that the truth is that he doesn’t have the best Copa America.
Brazil is eyeing a first Copa America title since 2007 but Silva remains worried about the threat that Messi still holds to them.
The former AC Milan player stated that they would need to focus especially on the opponent when they have the ball and when they haven’t. He even stated that it’s an advantage to be able to face him again and they would try to put the brakes.
Another semi-final match is between holders Chile, seeking a third successive Copa America title, and Peru in Porto Alegre on Thursday (01:30 BST).
