A Double Win for Federer at the Laureas Award

Roger Federer claimed another No. 1 ranking in the world. The Swiss tennis icon won the award for Sportsman of the Year leaving behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Nadal. He also won the Comeback of the Year award after recovering from the knee injury and winning the20th Grand Slam title at the Australian open in the year 2018. The title was given by Laureas World Sports Award held at Monaco.
Federer won this award for six times since the inception of Laureas Awards which began in the year 2000. The sports star said that this was a very special moment for him as he know how valued the Laureas awards are. It wonderful for him to won two awards in the same year and this has been an honour to him.
He also thanked the academy at Laureas for their support and said that the year of 2018 will be memorable for him because he won back to back two awards and also this was his comeback year after 2016. Rafael didn’t believe he would end up getting 6 Laureas Awards when he got his first one in the year 2005. This was truly unexpected for him.
The Sportswoman of the Year award went to Serena Williams and Sergio Garcia won the Breakthrough award. Edwin Mosses won the Lifetime Achievement Award while Francesco Totti the footbridge legend won the Academy Exceptional Achievement Award for his relentless service to nations like Italy and Roma. Mercedes-AMG Petronas won the award for Team of the Year while the Disability award was won by three times’ Swiss champion wheel chair racer Marcel Hug.
