The second semi-final match of the 2019 World Cup was not like the first semi-final match that was held between New Zealand and India at Old Trafford in Manchester. In fact, the second semi-final match, between Australia and England turned out to be a lopsided affair. England dominated the powerful Australians. The Three Lions secured an eight-wicket victory at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. Eventually, this helped the Three Lions to book a berth for the finals, which would be played against Kane Williamson’s New Zealand at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
Smith Guides the Aussies
Aussies won the toss and decided to bat; Australia couldn’t take full advantage of the pitch as they were bowled out for 223 in 49 overs.
Jofra Archer pinned Aaron Finch for a golden duck after which Chris Woakes found David Warner’s outside edge. Woakes jolted Peter Handscomb’s woodwork to further shake the Aussies.
Easy for the Hosts
The run-chase turned out to be an easy game for the Three Lions. Roy and Bairstow were careful to start. However, the duo pushed on the accelerator as the innings moved on. A couple of overs later, Pat Cummins bowled out Roy as well. But as England had already used their review, a dejected Roy went back to the pavilion. It was Joe Root and Eoin Morgan who helped the team to reach the finishing line with 17.5 overs to spare.
